Auditions

Location:  Bethesda United Methodist Church

Time:  7:30 p.m.

Auditions for the choir are held annually or as needed by the director, and all members must follow the guidelines set in the by-laws. Please contact us even if the audition date has passed since we may have an immediate opening for which you could be considered. Interested applicants should continue reading and request an application packet. The audition process is explained below.

Membership in Capital Carillon offers individuals the opportunity to explore their potential as musicians, increase their skills as handbell ringers, and contribute to the growth, development and recognition of Capital Carillon, one of the nation's premier handbell ensembles. Membership in Capital Carillon can be a life-changing experience. Capital Carillon appreciates the contributions of each individual member to the ensemble. The most important traits for a member to possess are: commitment, a positive attitude, and a musical aptitude.

The mission statement of Capital Carillon has guided past, present and future members:

To attract, organize, educate, and rehearse qualified handbell ringers in all aspects of handbell music.
To educate others in the community through performances of handbell music.
To promote the art of handbell music.
To encourage the public appreciation of and interest in handbell music.

Prior to an audition, interested individuals are asked to submit an application.  Information sought in the application includes:

Pertinent personal information, such as address, e-mail addresses, etc.
Ringing and/or directing experience(s).
Years of experience in handbells.
Years of experience in other musical disciplines.
Representative list of handbell compositions that indicates proficiency level.
Preferred handbell assignment.
Ranking of abilities in various handbell techniques

The audition itself consists of four parts:

1. Written test: Measures knowledge, recognition and definitions of handbell terminology and notation as well as fundamental recognition of basic music theory structure in handbell literature.
2. Group sight ringing of up to four handbell compositions.
3. Individual skills test: Based on rhythm and coordination skills drills and exercises.
4. One-on-one interview with the Artistic Director: Questions cover topics such as commitment, scheduling, interest and desire to be in the ensemble, and acceptance of membership, if selected.
